Whatmough boys have spirited rides

27/12/2006

CYCLING: ABC Centreville's Paul and Ryan Whatmough travelled to Yorkshire for a top-class cyclo-cross event and, while both had problems on the day, they came out very well.

In the under 12 competition Ryan fell in the early stages and was placed last after regaining his feet.

But a fighting and spirited performance saw him ride his way through the field to take a creditable seventh place.

Paul made quite a good start and was circulating well in the top 10 when he made a challenge to move up through the field.

The pace picked up considerably over the next lap and Paul had a tough time holding on to the riders in front.

However, in the next couple of laps the pacesetters paid the price and slowed considerably.

The Heywood man's consistent pace began to pay off. He passed one rider, then caught and passed two more and pulled out a large gap on the next lap to finish in a very good fifth place overall in an excellent field.
