Busy year for local darts players

THE first piece reported Heywood hotshot Darren Latham's county call-up when he contributed successfully to Lancashire GMC's men's B 7-5 win over Essex.

In his next match Latham averaged 101.50 and picked up the top player award against Glamorgan.

Engineers beat Bay Horse 5-2 to become Heywood Men's League champions and, a week later, the Engineers ladies team won the women's B Division title.

Heywood Town won a crucial Super League match 6-4.

Heywood were denied promotion to the Lancashire GMC First Division on legs difference, by Blackburn, in May, but an appeal to the county committee on the grounds of an irregularity on Blackburn's part was upheld. Heywood and East Lancs were promoted.

Freemasons' landlady Louise Bailey won the Heywood ladies individual title, Darren Latham having taken the equivalent in the Pubmaster Men's League.

Dave Lennard and Mick Milner (Engineers) won the pairs title.

Peter Skerritt picked up the Billy Lennard Memorial Trophy for the second year running after beating Alex Singh 3-0, while Steve Horner beat Paul Langford in the final to win the Ken Pickston Memorial Trophy.

Brunswick became Heywood Ladies Summer League champions.

Chris Jacques beat his Bay Horse team-mate Steve Horner to win the Trithon League's individual crown.

Top professional Wayne 'Hawaii 501' Mardle was the guest of the Heywood Enterprise Pubmaster League's annual exhibition night in November.

And to round off a busy year of darts in Heywood, Mark Holden claimed the £500 first prize in the Kings Arms knockout.
