Siddal slay seaside sixth-former squad

SIDDAL Moor girls' under 15s basketball team gave a towering display against an older and more experienced visiting team from Blackpool.

The sixth formers from the seaside were favourites to win, but the Heywood youngsters were not overawed. Within the first minute Moor gained the upper hand as captain and international Jessica Tensel homed in with two magnificent baskets. Tight defence and the constant rebounding from Rebecca Langford, Rebecca Rostern and Jane Bennett in the first quarter gave the locals the edge.

However, in the second quarter, the skilful sixth formers picked up the pace and rose to the challenge. This did not dampen the spirits of the lively home team as Jennifer Cunningham and Linzi Allen hit the target to give Siddal a convincing 44-16 lead at the end of the first half. After the interval there was everything to play for.

Both teams put in maximum effort, but it became clear, despite their best efforts, Blackpool would be unable to close the gap. And so it proved as the Heywood girls ran out winners by 79-44 to retain their undefeated record.

Amanda Allison played her heart out, Georgina McNulty, Claire Travis and Chelsea Tensel gave their all at both ends of the court.
