Championships were held recently at Manchester Velodrome, with 30 countries and more than 600 competitors taking part.

Members of Heywood’s Rendo Kai Karate club took part with Lee Power, Craig Cooke and Steve Woby awarded bronze in team kata and team kumite.

Ben Gidley won a gold in sanbon kumite, making him the reigning world champion in this category. He also won a silver medal in ippon kumite.

Ben,12, attends Holy Family School and has trained at karate for two and a half years.

Robbie Cooke, Sam Conley and Melissa Robb reached the quarter finals of their respective competitions.

Rendo Kai Instructor Sensei Marc Leacock was extremely proud of his students' achievements.
