AFTER the second of last season’s cup final victories against local rivals Heywood Reform, questions were asked as to whether Woolpack - previously the Duke of Wellington - could reproduce the same form in premier division.

Having gained promotion to the top flight, it seems Woolpack are keen to answer those questions with three wins from three matches and 21 goals scored.

Sunday’s match against Cheers Bar got off to a slow start and after 17 minutes Cheers stole the lead.

Woolpack were stunned into action and settled down to play some neat football.

They equalised with a fine header from Daz Lang and moved into a 2-1 lead just before half-time, Andy Lang finishing off a flowing move by slotting one into the bottom corner.

Cheers were full of fight and they shocked Woolpack early in the second half as they levelled the scores.

This brought the desired response from Woolpack, Andy Davies scoring two superb goals and last season’s top scorer Martin Cosgrove netting one in between.

Man of the match for Woolpack was left back Duncan Cooper, which indicates Cheers Bar were no pushover.

This is an encouraging start to the season for the promoted side and in Heywood Reform and Woolpack the town has two teams to be proud of. The prospects for an exciting season are mouthwatering.
