Nuttall Skye high to beat seasiders

2/10/2008

Max Local FA Sunday Trophy

Heywood St James Reform  8
Skye (Blackpool) FC  0

POOR old Skye. First of all the players lost their way en route to Phoenix Park, then they lost their way on the pitch as a rampant Heywood ‘St James’ Reform side, led by sharp shooting Chris Nuttall raced to an 8-0 victory.

The visiting seasiders had no answer to Nuttall’s pace and clinical finishing and, well fed by the hard working and inventive midfield of Bates, McCulloch, Hogarth and Tait the Reform rocket bagged a 30-minute hat trick that had the Blackpool team on the rocks.

All of Nuttall’s goals were quality finishes as the Skye defence failed to contain his movement and, in reply, had little up front to unsettle the strength and expertise of Nicholson, Gill, Reid and Tatton, leaving goalkeeper Lee Grogan a virtual spectator.

Mike Weatherilt headed home Reform’s fourth to record his first goal of the season, before Matt Hogarth set up Gordon Tait who gave the hosts a comfortable 5-0 interval lead.

Reform continued to dominate in the second half but, mainly due to a display of unorthodox goalkeeping by an eccentric Skye custodian, the goals dried up.

It wasn’t until manager McCulloch rang the changes that Reform showed more zip and Weatherilt headed in his second goal from Nuttall’s pin-point cross.

Substitute Craig Winter then headed home Tatton’s fine cross before Nuttall crashed the ball in the back of the net for his fourth of the morning.

At 8-0 referee Alan Wilkinson ended the visitors misery by blowing the final whistle and Reform go into the hat for the third round draw.

On Sunday, St James Reform travel to Elizabethan in the first round of the Challenge Cup, kick-off 10.30am.

Players meet Lidl car park at 9.30am.

The Tote numbers for Sunday were 13 and 6. Not won, jackpot for Sunday £120. Name card for a bottle of whisky, Jay Smith.
