Just champion!
14/ 8/2008
AFTER two weeks of gruelling chess at St George’s Hall in Liverpool, Heywood’s Keith Arkell won the English Chess Championships.
He eventually emerged as joint winner last Friday, alongside Grandmaster Stuart Conquest.
More remarkably, Arkell, who lives on Lune Grove and is also a Grandmaster only recently returned to playing after several years break.
The champion, though, isn’t resting on his laurels and has a busy schedule.
He has been invited to play in Boston in the United States, before returning to England to play in a tournament in London.
Arkell then plans to stay a bit closer to home and will feature as a regular
member of the Heywood Chess team next season.
Before that, however, he is laying down an exciting challenge for local golfers.
On Tuesday 23 September he is inviting chess enthusiasts to take him on in a simultaneous display.
The event at Heywood Chess Club at Hopwood Unionist Club, Manchester Road starts at 7.30pm.
Anyone interested in taking on the English chess champion can contact Bill O’Rourke the secretary of Heywood Chess Club on 01706 627874.
