Heywood edged out in thrilling encounter

HEYWOOD Town darts team were involved in a thriller at Newton Heath in the Greater Manchester Super League on Sunday, coming from 3-0 down to take the match into a deciding set.
Scott Howarth, Carl Langley and Mike Ahern made sure the result rested on the last set by entering the winner’s enclosure. Jimmy Phillips was unlucky not to join them as he hit two 180s in a narrow loss.
Heywood will be looking to get back to winning ways on Sunday when they entertain Radcliffe at the Bay Horse. They will be going into the match with confidence after beating Radcliffe 4-3 on the opening day of the season.
Michael Ahern qualified for the finals of the Springbrook Bowling Club Darts KO in September after coming through last week’s heats. Matt Langley also entered the heats but failed to get through, although he fired two 180s. Further qualifying nights are being held over the next four Wednesdays.
There were 180s galore in the Heywood Men’s Summer League last week. Jimmy Phillips struck twice as his St James FC team won 5-2 at Heywood Cricket Club whose Mike Horrocks also hit one. Paul Leonard an Chris Jacques both got 180s for the Bay Horse who came out 6-1 winners against the Hare and Hounds. Justin Ashton (The Heywood), Carl Langley (Duke of Wellington), Matt Langley (Browns) and Steve Cross (St James) were the other players to throw maximums.
