Duke suffer first loss

THE Duke of Wellington lost their unbeaten record in the Heywood Summer League last week, defeated by title rivals Browns Wine Bar 5-2.
Five weeks into the campaign, four teams share top spot on eight points. As well as the Duke and Browns, the Engineers, who beat Heywood 6-1, and St James FC, who won 5-2 at the Hare and Hounds, have won four of their five games.
Jimmy Phillips hit successive 180s in helping St James FC to victory, while Paul Cosgrove’s 133 checkout via treble 17, bull and double 16 gave some consolation to Hark to Towler, beaten 5-2 at Heywood Cricket Club. The Engineers’ Mark Eccles tops the ‘ton’ table with 26 three figure scores.
Beverley Benson’s 112 checkout was the highlight in last week’s Heywood Ladies League matches. It helped her Summit team draw 3-3 at the Brown Cow.
The Stonemasons who had won their opening four matches were held to a 3-3 draw by the Duke of Wellington. They still top the table with 21 points but only one ahead of the Woolpack, 4-2 winners at Bay Horse.
The Bay Horse will stage a big match on Sunday when Heywood play host to Blackley (VASA) in the first division of the Greater Manchester Super League.
Both teams have won their opening two matches and only a point separates them at the head of affairs. Blackley have 13 points, Heywood have 12.
