Thompson power achieves belting win and first title

HEYWOOD boxer Mark Thompson has won his first professional title.

He beat Poland’s Maurycy Gojko to collect the vacant International Masters title, and hopes this is the first step towards a major championship.

Thompson was, no doubt, looking to be tested, but the fight was almost over before it began.

The Heywood man started aggressively, throwing several big right hands, and Gojko was soon on the canvas, a right and left from Thompson doing the damage.

The Polish fighter managed to haul himself up but was caught by a big left hook to the chin. Gojko went down again, and did well to beat the count.

Thompson, though, landed another right hand and referee Steve Grey stopped the fight after one minute 31 seconds of the first round.

Jamie Moore presented Thompson with the International Masters belt.

Thompson’s next bout is in Portsmouth on the 13 June. His opponent has yet to be named, but he will be looking for a much sterner challenge as he goes in search of further titles, with one eye firmly set on the British title

Thompson’s record is now 15 fights, 14 wins, nine by knockout and one defeat.
