Kerianne books an Olympic spot

17/ 4/2008

HEYWOOD swimming star Kerianne Payne has booked her place at the Olympic Games in Beijing in August.

The Bury Street resident, who is believed to be the first local to be selected as an Olympian, has been selected for the 200m and 400m Individual Medley events.

To make the grade Payne, 20, had to achieve the Olympic qualifying time in her heat and finish in the top two in the final of last week’s Olympic Trials.

Payne rose to the challenge in the 200m Individual Medley heat, reaching the qualifying time with an excellent swim. She sealed her selection by touching home 0.26 seconds behind Hannah Miley to claim silver.

In the 400m Individual Medley again finished just behind Miley to take silver and claim her second nomination for Beijing.

Payne started her swimming career at Rochdale Aquabears before moving to her current club Stockport Metro. Her coach at Stockport Sean Kelly was delighted with her efforts and said: "Kerianne broke the British record in the 400m individual medley and also qualified in the 200m.

"She went from 300th in the world to the top six in the 200m IM which is fantastic."
