Rachel stars

HOPWOOD Golf Club’s rising star Rachel Connor helped take England to the final of the women’s European Championships earlier this month at Murcar, Scotland.

In qualifying, Connor led the way with a one over par 73, a round which included an eagle and 16 greens hit in regulation.

She again finished with top score on the final day of qualifying with a level par score of 72.

Connor beat Charlotte Lorentzen 5 and 4 in her singles as Denmark were defeated in the quarter finals.

Battling performances earned England a 4-1 victory over the Netherlands and a place in the final.

Connor won her foursome 3 and 2, but it was in the singles match where she played an outstanding round and showed mental strength beyond her years to earn victory.

She found herself four down after 10 holes and was staring defeat in the face. Connor then fought back to win the next four holes and get back on level terms. And, having lost the 16th she held her nerve to take the last two holes and beat Caroline Karsten in what was a thrilling game.

Connor was the only girl in the side to take points in her singles match in the final, halving with Amanda Strang. However, the efforts of Connor and her team-mates weren’t quite enough to win the championships as they lost to Sweden in the final.
