Heywood St James 2 – 1 Fives Athletic

HEYWOOD St James edged an enthralling encounter with Fives Athletic at Phoenix Park on Saturday.

The hosts started strongly and should have taken an early lead when Tatton shot just over after good work by Nicholson.

Fives responded well but Saints, led by Bates, Simpson and Reid held firm. Carney made a fine run down the right for the home team, his cross fired inches wide by Nuttall.

Saints took a deserved lead when Saints skipper Ricky Bates unleashed a powerful drive which the Fives keeper could only parry. Tatton was first to react as he slotted the ball home for a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, play went from end to end with Lynch going close for the hosts.  Saints had to reshuffle as Bainbridge was injured and Fives broke away to level the scores.

It was all to play for but Saints bounced back when a corner from the right was met by Carney, his firm header giving the Fives keeper no chance.

It was just reward for a battling performance by the Heywood team.

Man of the match for Saints was Jack Nicholson.

On Saturday Heywood St James are again at home, against Standians. Players are asked to meet at the clubhouse at 12.45pm.
