Clarence spot on to win cup shoot-out

ON A scorching hot afternoon, Clarence under 16s and Ringley created very few chances in a League Cup final that went all the way.

With defences in command Ringley just about edged the first half but were unable to penetrate the rock solid defensive wall of Rowles and Whitworth.

The second period was a more end to end affair and, as legs began to tire, both sides went in search of the goal which would more than likely win the cup.

With Ringley creating more chances as the match wore on, Clarence were grateful to keeper Dale Latham who was in unbeatable form as he pulled off a string of superb saves.

With seconds remaining, Clarence mustered a final attack and were awarded a penalty when a Ringley defender handled in his own box.

The spot kick was brilliantly saved, taking the match into extra time and eventually to the dreaded penalty shoot out.

Clarence held their nerve with Spencer, Sweatman and the Mott brothers all on target.

And with Latham pulling off an excellent stop the cup was on its way to Heywood.

In what was a hard fought match Clarence were well served in all departments, Dale Latham and Aaron Spencer sharing the Man-of- the-Match-Award.
