Stonemasons 8 - 1 Queensway Youth

26/ 3/2008

STONEMASONS enjoyed a comfortable victory over an understrength but brave Queensway outfit at Heywood Sports Centre on Saturday.

The hosts were soon into their stride, scoring an early goal when a slick pass from Adam Davies in midfield found centre forward Ross Jones. He left the defence for dead before hammering the ball into the roof of the net.

Form the restart, Stonemasons won the ball and Davies found Smith on the left. He slipped the ball to Joe Wilsher who surged into the penalty box and crashed a right-foot drive past a helpless keeper.

The home team were dominating the game, but they found the rutted pitch frustrating and were unable to employ their usual passing game.

Despite this, Stonemasons won a corner and quick-thinking Gary Goodall played it short to the near post where he found John McHale who lashed the ball into the back of the net.

Just before the break, captain Davies found himself one on one with the keeper and coolly lobbed him for a 4-0 interval lead.

There was no let up in the second half for Queensway, McHale making it five within minutes of the restart.

Davies then stole the show with two ultra-cool finishes. The first saw him dribble his way past several defenders, before sending the keeper the wrong way. The second was a cheeky chip over the advancing keeper as he again found himself through on goal.

Striker Kirk Orman was not to be denied as he ghosted in on the left side of the area to beat the offside trap and power home a left foot drive.

Queensway, though, were rewarded for their never-say-die attitude as they bagged a late goal.

Man of the match for Stonemasons was hat-trick hero Davies.
