Heywood St James 4 Manchester Juniors 2

HEYWOOD St James started off at a fast pace and dominated the early stages.

The breakthrough came when Tatton cut in from the left and hit a great shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Juniors fought back but Jack Nicholson and Dyson made some fine tackles and received good support from Elford in goal.

But, on the half-hour mark, Saints’ defence was rooted to the spot appealing for an offside decision which never came and Juniors scored from close range.

This setback spurred the Heywood team to greater efforts and a thunderbolt from Reid gave them a 2-1 interval lead.

In the second half, as the rain clouds gathered and pitch conditions deteriorated, Juniors hit back to level the scores.

Saints were then awarded a penalty and Reid blasted home the spot kick to give the locals an advantage they would not

surrender.

Juniors pushed forward but David Nicholson, Dyson and Reid cleared their lines.

With the rain now torrential Saints caught their opponents on the break and Dean made the game safe with a crisp finish.

Man of the match was Jack Nicholson.

On Saturday, Heywood St James travel for a derby match against Milton.  Players meet clubhouse at 1pm.

HOOLEY Bridge Celtic’s game at Old Trafford was abandoned after 60 minutes when a thunderstorm made the pitch unplayable.

Celtic were losing 2-1 at the time but were well on top after being 2-0 down.  Sweeney hit the target for the Heywood team, after good work from Whitehouse.

Celtic have drawn Trafford in the quarter final of the Rhodes Cup.  On Saturday, Celtic entertain Old Standians at Queens Park.

The reserve team travel to Whalley Range and the Thirds are also on the road to take on Bedians.

All players meet at the Starkey at 12.45pm.
