Kaye bags seven to keep title challenge on track

ON Saturday, for perhaps the first time this season, the localised weather conditions enjoyed by the Central Lancashire League did not work against Heywood, as they managed to complete what turned out to be a five-point victory over Clifton, and extend their lead at the top of the table to six points.
Heywood batted first and although rain was in the air, 38 overs had elapsed when the players had to leave the field.
However, with Clifton having relied extensively on a seam-based attack, and having bowled a number of wides and no-balls, on resumption they were faced with having to bowl 12 overs in 30 minutes.
Falling two overs short of the target meant that if Heywood could bowl their overs within the allotted time, they would be entitled to the full five points in the event they won the match but didn’t bowl out their opponents.
Heywood’s eventual total of for eight was founded on a high quality innings from Ruvin Peiris, who fell nine short of what would have been a deserved century, and another vital contribution of 48 from Royce Blight.
Faced with bowling 40 overs in 15 minutes under two hours, Bobby Cross very quickly turned to spin in the shape of Chris Kaye and Ruvin Peiris. Kaye wheeled away for 21 overs and at one point looked like running through the whole card, to finish with seven for 75, as Clifton struggled to threaten Heywood’s total.
Mukhtar and Lord offered some resistance, but as Heywood successfully completed their overs on time, Clifton’s reply 180-8 meant the five points boosted Heywood’s title challenge.
