Heywood lad making the Grade

FORMER Heywood Cricket Club all rounder Josh Webb, who has had three seasons in Sydney playing for the University of New South Wales, has played in the First Grade team in two end-of-season games.

Webb, right, who attended St Luke’s Primary School and Siddal Moor College says the standard in the Sydney League is high and wickets are a lot faster because of the weather, which can make for some interesting batting. He has an excellent season scoring 430 runs, including a highest score of 145. He also took 27 wickets.

Webb is currently working as a trainee draughtsman in Sydney.

WITH Unsworth’s Pole Lane ground more suited to Noah and his Ark, Heywood first team is still waiting to launch the league campaign.

The Seconds fared little better, although they did manage to spend some time in the middle, reducing Unsworth to 50-4 before rain curtailed proceedings.

The Third Team, however, got off to a winning start as they came out on top in a low-scoring match at Whalley Range.

Heywood, with captain Bob Dearden risking vertigo by batting at number six, accumulated 75 runs on a wet wicket, surrounded by a lengthy, damp outfield.

Mel Fawcett top scored with 15 on a very tricky surface, but the team’s bowlers, particularly Nathan Cockcroft and Ollie Slawson with seven wickets between them, put in top-class performances as Whalley Range were dismissed for 48.

This weekend, Milnrow visit Crimble on Sunday, while it’s a trip to Werneth on Saturday – weather permitting!
