Clouds have silver lining for Heywood

17/ 4/2008

THERE’S only one thing that the onset of the traditional ‘April showers’ brings, and that is the start of the cricket season.

Unfortunately, as has been the case in recent times, the usual round of pre-season friendly matches has been washed out, but the weather has been so bad that Sunday’s opening Central Lancashire Cricket League fixtures have also been called off – postponed to the first reserve date on Saturday 17 May.

However, all is not doom and gloom at Crimble. The club’s new Sri Lankan professional, Ruvin Peiris, has been delayed due to his club’s involvement in a Twenty20 competition, but now might land in time for the revised start date.

As always the Cricket Club relies heavily on the support of Heywood townsfolk and this season is no different. In recent years the performances on the pitch have resulted in a noticeable increase in crowd attendances, and with the invaluable help of our loyal supporters and sponsors, it has helped the club improve facilities.

The Crimble crowd has been Heywood’s ‘12th man’ on the field, more than contributing to the recent run of four Wood Cup final victories in five years and the League Title in 2006.

Everyone at Crimble hopes that will be the case this season as the club welcomes all supporters, young and old, to our open, family orientated club.

So with Sunday’s scheduled curtain raiser against Walsden postponed, it’s left to the Second XI to get proceedings under way at Crimble on Sunday 26 April against Unsworth while the First XI will be hoping to win the toss and bat with the tide at Unsworth’s Pole Lane ground.

Tickets are also on sale for this year’s pre-season dinner which is to be held on Friday 25 April in the pavilion.

Guest speaker is former media manager for the rugby football league and rugby league correspondent for the Daily Mirror John Huxley.

Laughs will be provided by comedian Tom Pepper. Tickets are £25 and the price includes a three-course dinner. For further details on this weekends friendlies or to order tickets for the dinner contact the club on 01706 369146.
