Crimble crew aiming for a blinder
3/ 4/2008
SPRING has sprung, the clocks have gone forward and outdoor nets are looming – it’s that time of year again when cricket fans everywhere are looking forward with eager anticipation to the new season, and Heywood fans should be no exception.
The club is delighted to welcome Sri Lankan professional Ruvin Peiris to Crimble. Peiris is an accomplished top order batsman and orthodox left-arm bowler, and brings a wealth of coaching experience to the club, which will benefit the club’s teams in particular and, hopefully, cricket-mad youngsters in local schools. Joining Peiris will be one of Heywood’s most popular overseas amateurs, Australian Royce Blight, who is returning for his third stint at the club.
The club’s young seam attack, comprising Steven Cheetham and Tom Hardman, has been bolstered by the arrival of John Storey from Milnrow. John needs little introduction to Crimble fans and is accompanied by fellow Milnrow teammate Danny Pawson. Danny is a young batsman with great potential who has played Lancashire and the CLL at junior level, and will take over behind the sticks with university commitments keeping Jon Shaw in Newcastle.
Among all these comings and goings, captain Bobby Cross is keen to highlight the ‘local heroes’ in the club. Players such as Cross himself, Chris Kaye, Rob Slawson, Steve Wallwork and Lee Grogan have been with the club ‘man and boy’, and their dedication and commitment to the club’s cause has underpinned the successes of recent years.
So, what does the season hold? Hopefully the new arrivals will hit the ground running, and the weather will not be such an important factor as last year, when Rochdale’s season got off to such a flying start as they managed to dodge the downpours.
With Mark Kenny and Phil Dawson seeking to make their mark at first team level and youngsters from the club’s successful under 15s team pushing for senior team places, the signs are positive.
The second team has a new leader with Roger Smethurst taking over from David Fare, and Roger has captured the first victory of the campaign, as he and Rick Purser won the initial CLL golf competition of the season last week.
Off the pitch, the club is over the moon to welcome Goldrick Blinds as one of its major sponsors. Mike Goldrick and his company have been incredible supporters of the Heywood sporting community and the club looks forward to a long and rewarding partnership. Goldrick Blinds will be main kit sponsors and there will be more news on their sponsorship, and initiatives with other club sponsors in the coming weeks.
