Brothers in arms impress the judges with their skill

19/ 3/2008

BOXING brothers Kieran and Nathan Farrell have both defied the odds to score impressive wins against more experienced opponents. writes Frank Wood.

Kieran, 17, travelled to Belfast with a Manchester Select team for a big tournament against Holy Trinity ABC, the club which spawned former IBO super middleweight champion Brian Magee.

Nathan, 14, was in action at Radcliffe Civic Centre in a tournament organised by Bury ABC.

The brothers, who live in Wham Street, Heywood both scored unanimous points victories.

Boarshaw ABC fighter Kieran, who has pulled off a string of shock wins in recent months, upset the form book again by beating Irish national champion Michael Conlon, who bills himself as Mick 2 Slick. He is expected to box in this summer’s Olympic Games, but his reputation failed to unnerve the smaller Heywood boxer.

Despite rocking from a barrage of lightning punches in the first round, Kieran came back strongly and in the second and third rounds landed body shots that had Conlon twice taking a standing eight count.

Kieran, who works for his dad’s asphalting business, said: "He was the most slippery customer I have ever had to box and kept switching from orthodox to southpaw throughout the fight. But I soon discovered that he didn’t like body shots and that’s how I got the better of him."

In the Radcliffe tournament, younger brother Nathan, a pupil at Heywood Community High School, faced a re-match with Michael Buxton of Spire ABC, Chesterfield. He beat Buxton first time round in Chesterfield two months ago and performed an action replay in Radcliffe.

Nathan, who boxes with Darnhill and Heywood ABC, was fighting in only his third tournament but displayed the composure of a much more experienced boxer to win every round. He has now scored three wins in three fights.
