Digging deep

16/11/2006

THE pounds are piling up for daredevil Advertiser reporters Vicki Holman and Michael Byrne as they look to raise money for the Mayor's Charities.

Vicki and Michael are doing a parachute jump on March 17 next year to raise money for Scope and Mind, the charities mayor Jean Hornby has chosen to support in her appeal.

Cllr Hornby and her husband Barrie were the first to pledge cash towards the jump, digging deep to donate £25 each.

Farooq Ahmed, who runs the Veenas Restaurant on York Street, has also come forward with a contribution and he has given £100 to the fund.

Farooq said: "I'm very pleased to support Michael and Vicki's appeal as the mayor's charities are very worth causes.

"Doing a parachute jump sounds like fun and I was even thinking of doing one myself."

The Advertiser has also given £100 towards the jump and the fund already stands at £300.

Councillor Hornby said: "I'm very pleased the fundraising has got off to such a good start and very grateful to Farooq for his generous donation.

"I hope other companies will do the same."

HEYWOOD MP Jim Dobbin handed over a bottle of the hard stuff to help the Mayor's Charity Christmas raffle get off to a flying start.

Mr Dobbin has donated a bottle of House of Commons Whisky to help Cllr Hornby raise cash for the mental health charity Mind and Scope, which supports people with cerebral palsy.

The whisky goes alongside some other great prizes in the raffle including a cake decorated with poinsettias, the traditional Christmas flowers, boxes of chocolates and a hamper with Christmas goodies.

Raffle tickets are on sale from the charity hat stall in the market.
