Rowdy behaviour stops Late licence

22/ 2/2006

ROWDY behaviour and the failure to help police in reducing crime has led to the closure of one of Heywood's top night spots.

Police say they have been keeping a close eye on The Basement on Taylor Street, also known as The Late, for some time following complaints about disorder and under age drinking.

Officers were called in after trouble broke out in the club in the early hours of Saturday, February 11.

Heywood police chief, Inspector Angela Bradley said when they arrived they found obvious signs of damage and one customer who had been assaulted but that management and those who witnessed the incident seemed unwilling to help them in their inquiries.

"We did not feel the club was being run in as responsible way as we would like to see and applied for a 24-hour closure notice," she said. "We had been monitoring the premises and this was the final straw. It was quite a large-scale incident and there was at least one injured party but no one was able to tell us what had happened.

"We compiled all the evidence of unruly and disorderly behaviour as well as under age drinking and took it to the licensing court. We did not feel that they have taken appropriate measures to control rowdy behaviour and have failed to help police in reducing crime associated with drinkers."

Their request for closure was accepted and the period of the notice extended to 28 days for the terms of the licence to be reviewed.

During that period the club's management have the right to make their appeals before a final decision is made which could alter or revoke the licence.

A spokesperson for the Rochdale Safer Communities team told the Advertiser that in addition to the problems with under age drinking, concerns had also been raised that a number of people banned under the pub and club watch scheme had been allowed into The Basement.

Inspector Bradley is now appealing for any witnesses to the incident, which occurred at 2.20am on Saturday, February 11, to contact police on 0161 856 8587.

i think that there is no reason for the late night club to be cloesed it doesnt make the trouble go away it just moves on to another one of the night life places in heywood so that obviously shows that we need more help from the police. They are usually never to far away from the night club but for some reason it took them just under 1 hour to get to there. so if you can see its not the clubs fault why the trouble starts

the Basement has been closed for all the wrong reasons in my oppinaion anyway if the police would have gave more assistance with regards to that saturday night the fighting didnt even happen inside to club it all happened out doors on the car park and the police was called 1 hour before they arrived its not the club where all the trouble is there has still been trouble in other places for eg the vic on friday night mean while the basement was closed so i would say that if there was more support from the police that would bring the crime down
