Relief to traffic problems

DEMOLISHING Heywood market and a new relief road are among plans to solve the town's traffic problems.

Proposals were laid out for public inspection this week and for many it was a first glimpse of the radical ideas to put an end to town centre congestion.

Two days of public consultation was held as the council, New Deal and Rochdale Development Agency seek to move forward with one of four possible options set out for Heywood.

They favour re-routing the main A58 down West Starkey Street, which would involve a relief road cutting through land near George Street to meet Bury Street, but must first gain the approval of townsfolk.

But the market building seems doomed as all four options involve cutting through the current premises and relocating it.

In three out of the four options, Dawson Street is set to be pedestrianised with shops on Market Street transformed to front onto it and the entrance to the Times Retail Park moved to Garden Street.

As a HGV Driver who lives in Heywood, it infuriates me why Rochdale Council just keep turning a blind eye to the ever worsening situation in our town. My job takes me to every corner of the country and have to deliver the goods (Pool Tables) to domestic properties as well as industrial parks. What i see when approaching towns similar to Heywood are proper bypasses that takes the motorist passing through, completely away from the centre, not re-routeing them through residential and play areas (Starkey Street). It seems that Rochdale Council cannot wait to allow more commercial property to be built in the Pilsworth area which obviously brings with it more traffic, cars as well as lorries, yet still no appropriate road to these ever growing developments. They should be spending all of the monies that the council receive every year from these companies on the proper infrastructure around them. I see the new Kingsway Retail Park currently under construction in Rochdale will have its own direct sliproad from the M62 motorway! Look after No.1 eh.

Heywood would not need a relief road if traffic had better access to the Industrial estate at Pilsworth .All heavy goods should be banned through our Town Centre. At a council meeting last year a weight limit for Pilsworth rd was approved and has not been implemented. The highways department also put forward plans for a lorrygate again no further action.Rochdale council should plan for a Ring rd and better motorway access instead of ruining our Town centre and destroying homes and businesses.
