Firemen take the plunge

14/12/2005

FIREFIGHTERS from Heywood jumped into a freezing canal to rescue a woman from drowning.

Members of the station's water incident unit were called to the Portland canal basin at Ashton-under-Lyne just after midnight on Sunday after police reported that a woman had jumped in. Two members of the Heywood crew donned dry suits and jumped into the water to grab the woman, who appeared to be unconscious.

With the help of rope lines and a buoyancy aid, they were able to haul her to the towpath where she was given first aid by an ambulance crew before being taken to Tameside General Hospital.

Sub-officer Neil Fox said the rescue was a team effort and the names of the two firemen who entered the water were not being released.

He said: "We were very pleased to be able to get the woman out alive. When we got her to the towpath, she started breathing. The water was very cold and she would have been suffering from hypothermia."

Police say the 30-year-old woman, who has not been named, has made a good recovery in hospital.
