Spending a penny could be thing of the past

PUBLIC conveniences in Heywood which have already been branded inadequate look set to take a further blow.

Council chiefs are considering pulling the plug on the borough's superloos which would leave the centre of Heywood without any public toilets.

Last month the Advertiser reported on new moves to get Hind Hill Street public loos - closed in 1998 - re-opened with pressure mounting after people were refused permission to use public toilets in Heywood Civic Centre.

It left 'the tardis', the coin operated cubicle in Bamford Road, as the only option for people desperate to spend a penny in the town centre but now it seems even that could be set to vanish.

As part of a bid to claw back a budget deficit of £8.2M council bosses are looking at scrapping superloos to save £70,000.

The cubicle has not proved popular since it was installed and Raymond Marsh, of Woodland Road, claimed many people are too scared to use it.

But he said that to leave no facilities at all would be a disgrace.

"We pay our rates and these things should be provided," he added.

Even the Civic Centre, where people have argued they should be able to use the toilets there, closes in January for refurbishment for almost three months.

Liberal Democrat campaigner Peter Rush, who has previously raised the issue of Heywood's lack of facilities with the Advertiser, said: "I believe we are the poor relation of Rochdale already.

"I can find toilets to use there very easily but in Heywood I've been approached by a lot of people complaining about the situation as it stands.

"I think we have been let down by Rochdale Council and our own councillors. If we can't even have a loo what will we be deprived of next?"

However, Councillor Brian Davies has said he will ask the council to look again at the possibility of re-opening the Hind Hill toilets with measures to prevent the kind of unwanted behaviour which prompted their closure.

I think you should keep the toilet there because its a part of heywood and if you spend money on it you could make it not smell and you could tidy it up inside so it is not a mess so this is my commit and i think you should spend money on it.
