Making a song and dance about Lisa

A TEENAGER who overcame a spinal deformity to become the toast of Hey Kids junior theatre group is the first winner of a new memorial award.

Lisa Whitley, 18, of Summit, had a major operation to correct curvature of her spine five years ago.

The girl who was already a talented actress and singer then astounded everyone when she took up dancing too. Now she does all three in Hey Kids' shows.

Lisa was picked by the committee to be the first recipient of a shield in memory of one of the Hey Kids' founders Ian Simpson, who died this year. The shield has been donated by Helen and Colin Ridsdale, whose sons Daniel and Matthew both perform with the group.

Ian's widow Michele, who presented the award at final curtain of Summer Holiday at the Civic Centre on Saturday night, said Lisa had been chosen for more than just the effort she puts in on stage.

"Whatever Hey Kids are doing, Lisa gets involved," said Michele. "It doesn't matter whether we are bag packing at Morrisons or carol singing to raise funds, she is always there.

"We couldn't think of anyone who deserved to receive the award more than Lisa."

Lisa, who is studying for a childcare degree, said: "Hey Kids is a fantastic group. I have loved every minute of being in Summer Holiday. I had a small speaking part, I was in the chorus and also danced."

I just want to say how proud I am to have recieved this award,(Ian Simpson memorial sheild) even more proud to have recieved an award in memory of a man who I looked up to so much.I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in Heykids for giving me the opportunity to be involved in such a fantastic group and thanks for all your support through the difficult times for example my operation. Over the past nine years I have made so many great friends who I'm sure will be life long friends. One again thank you Heykids, keep up the good work and I will continue to support you for many years to come!
