Make local feeling known, says Carol

COUNCILLOR Carol Wardle is leading the campaign to ensure a planning appeal to build an equestrian centre that will involve a massive landfill operation is turned down.

As the Advertiser reported last week, controversial plans for the development on Hareshill Road, submitted by Wilton Estates, are set to go to a public inquiry and Councillor Wardle is determined they will know the strength of feeling in the town.

As chairman of the Heywood Township planning sub-committee she recommended the plans were rejected when they went before members for their views in March. She also spoke out against them when the decision was taken by Rochdale Regulatory Committee to refuse planning permission.

But now she, like many others, fears the views of townsfolk could be overturned.

She is urging people who feel strongly about the matter to put pen to paper to make sure the planning inspector is aware just how much local feeling exists.

At the meeting of the regulatory committee more than 100 protesters gathered armed with placards that read 'No to landfill' and 'Save our green belt'.

Councillor Wardle said: "If like me you are appalled by the prospect of yet another landfill site in Heywood please let your views be known. We don't want 150 lorry movements every day for five years while they deposit inert waste in our town. We don't want the health risks to our children from the fumes of these vehicles and we don't feel we have any guarantee we will get an equestrian centre at the end of it all.

"It is nothing short of the rape of the green belt."

An appeal number has now been assigned. It is APP/P4225/A/05/1189632 and should be quoted in any correspondence. Letters of representation must be received by Thursday, December 1, and should be addressed to; The Planning Inspectorate, Room 3/ 04B Kite Wing, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Temple Quay, Bristol, BS1 6PN.

Councillor Wardle added: "Please do make every effort to write and lets show what Heywood thinks of this application. If you need any advice I can be contacted on 0161 653 6908 and we have the full support of our MP Jim Dobbin."

Regarding the proposed landfill site on Hareshill Road, I really think that not only will the threat of pollution in the area increase but also the air pollution is what concerns me most with St Josephs and Siddal Moor Schools being in very close proximity, not to mention the vermin and flies that this will create I don't think that Golden West and Yearsley will be too pleased
