Hundreds mourn courageous Carol

HUNDREDS paid their respects at the funeral of a Heywood woman who died of cancer just 12 weeks after her initial diagnosis.

Carol Simpson, 47, a policewoman based at Oldham Divisional HQ, had lived with partner Carol May, 48, also a policewoman, in Melrose Avenue for 11 years.

She paid tribute to "kind, intelligent and sharp witted" Carol who had a "heart of gold".

Carol's death came as a huge shock to her many friends and family. She continued the job she loved up to the day of her diagnosis with a malignant melanoma and had just passed her sergeants exams.

She was a talented sportswoman and had played hockey at county level for Lancashire.

Over 500 people attended her funeral. Carol May added: "She was very well respected both by her friends, family and colleagues. I knew she was well liked but the number of people at the funeral was phenomenal."

So many packed into Oldham Crematorium that the service was broadcast outside and police representatives formed a guard of honour.

Carol chose her own music for the service, which included G4's version of Everybody Hurts, and the order of service featured a picture painted for Carol by her sister Christine.

It was presented to her for her birthday, celebrated just six days before her death in a Macclesfield Hospice on July 26 and Christine signed each of the 300 copies produced by hand.

Carol moved to East Cheshire Hospice, close to the home of her cousin Cathy Beavis, after receiving treatment at Christie Hospital and the family have now formed strong links to the centre.

The many donations received from friends and neighbours were in aid of the hospice and Cathy has used Christine's painting to create cards which will be sold to raise further funds.

Carol May said: "Many of the people living on Melrose Avenue brought round cards and cheques and it was comforting to know how much they thought of Carol."

Their donations have been put to good use in the purchase of wrist bands for the hospice that will help to boost their coffers.

"Because Carol was nursed there we've become very attached to it. They were brilliant and we were able to stay with her 24 hours a day so we want to help them in any way we can."
