Silent tribute to London bomb victims

20/ 7/2005

TILLS stopped ringing, pints were left unpulled and tools were downed across Heywood as folk remembered those who lost their lives in the London bombings.

At Morrisons staff and customers stood heads bowed in sombre reflection for the two minute silence last Thursday, a scene repeated just yards away at Dunnes clothing and household store.

Instead of the usual bustle of HGVs at Pilsworth Industrial Estate there was an eerie silence in the air, with lorries parked up and many of the 2,300 staff stopping to pay their respects.

In the town centre, drinkers at The Edwin Waugh sat in reflective mood, while staff stood behind the bar in silence.

Dave Tonks, a manager at the Market Street pub, said: "We were quite full, with a good mix of both young and old.

"But despite this everyone observed the silence, including the bar staff."
