Murder remand after pub man’s death

29/ 6/2005

A HEYWOOD man has appeared in court charged with the murder of 44-year-old John Curran.

Simon Luke Hogan, 26, of Queen's Park Road was remanded in custody by Rochdale Magistrates and was due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday.

There was no application for bail and no plea was taken.

Mr Curran, of Ayr Grove, Darnhill, died in Royal Bolton Hospital two days after an incident in The Highlander pub on Sutherland Road.

Mr Curran, who lived with his widowed mother Madeline, was taken to Fairfield General Hospital in Bury after police had been called to an incident at the pub.

His condition deteriorated and he was transferred to the Royal Bolton where he died on Monday last week.

Mr Curran leaves two brothers and a sister as well as his mother.

The court was told that a second post mortem examination had been carried out on Mr Curran and medical reports were being sought by the defendant's lawyer.

I was deeply saddened to hear the horrific news about the tragic death of John curran, I last saw John in 2000 when I was in the uk for a holiday, i grew up on sutherland rd Darnhill and went to school with John and his family, my parents knew johns family from collyhurst and what a lovely family they are, what a tragic way to end a life so senseless, I hope that the offender is punished to the highest degree of the law and made to realise that life is a precious commodity that one should value,,, my prayers go out to his mom and family and I guess the only consolation out of this , is that john will now be with his beloved father for eternity and singing his frankie songs for all the heavens to enjoy, god bless you John.
