Snapshot of bygone days

1/ 9/2003

ADVERTISER photographer Jim Rowbotham vividly remembers the crowds that used to gather at the station at holiday times.

He took many pictures for the Advertiser, Rochdale Observer, Manchester Evening Chronicle and Manchester Evening News between 1949 and the railway's closure.

"I went down at holiday times taking photographs of special trips - families sitting on suitcases, that sort of thing," said Jim, of Gregge Street.

"During Wakes week you couldn't move on the platform for people. They were going to Fleetwood to catch the boat to the Isle of Man and to Blackpool. Some of the factories used to run special trips for workers. I remember one company, I think it was Healeys, running a whole train to Blackpool for a day trip."

But the station was not just busy at holiday time.

"A popular run for 2s 6d return was to Blackpool on a Friday and Saturday night for people to go to the Tower Ballroom for a dance," said Jim.
