Parking danger at schools

PARENTS who insist on driving their children to school in Pot Hall are putting other pupils' lives in danger as they drop off and park on double yellow lines.

Teachers at Holy Family College met with police as the situation is so bad they fear a pupil could be knocked down or even killed.

PCSO Mike Curran spent a week earlier this month monitoring the situation at the beginning and end of the school day and was shocked as he saw parents stopping their cars on dangerous stretches of Pot Hall marked with double yellow and cross hatched lines.

PCSO Curran said: "With the road being so tight, it is a very dangerous place for parents to park up or even just stop to drop off their children.

"Because there are two schools on the site there are hundreds of children trying to cross the road at the same time and parents should just not be parking there.

"I spoke to about 20 parents who stopped on double yellows or cross hatched lines while I was watching to give them a warning.

"Most of them that I spoke to didn’t think they were doing anything wrong, but there are signs there asking people not to park during school hours.

"It has been a problem for a while but it is getting worse."

After monitoring the situation for a week, PCSO Curran and fellow PCSO Simon Gregory have called in local authority traffic officers to give parking tickets to any parents who persist in parking or dropping off children on restricted parts of the road.

Brendan Coyle, deputy head at Holy Family College, said: "We have written to every parent asking them to support the school in this matter. It is a health and safety issue so that all students stay safe and we are very grateful to PCSO Curran for monitoring the situation."

It's not only the children who are at risk but anyone who is walking along the road at the time, also as a wheelchair user many times I have to go on the road as all the pavements are blocked by cars which have driven onto them. Why do most of these car drivers insist that they own the road? they want to try to walk the children to school instead, I have seeen parents who only live 5mins away from school deropping the children off in their cars this is utterly ridiculous. They just need to think of all the benefits of walking to school instead, healthier children and adults and less pollution.
