Flat residents plead for end to yob misery

15/ 5/2008

TENANTS of Angel Meadows are at the end of their tether with the drunken yobs who make their lives a misery at all hours of the day and night.

Despite the introduction of locked gates and an intercom system, residents say large groups of people are getting in at night and weekends.

At a Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meeting, representatives from the Angel Meadows Tenants’ and Residents’ Association said that the problem of drunken yobs coming to the flats is particularly bad at weekends after the pubs close.

One resident, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisals, said: "The local PCSO Mike Curran is very good, but we would like extra policing in the area because it is getting so bad and trouble is happening on a regular basis.

"We have found security gates propped open with cans of beer and lads come round at all hours, knocking on windows to try and get someone to let them in.

"Fights have broken out in the corridors and last weekend someone was thrown down the stairwell.

"It can be very frightening when it’s happening right on the other side of your front door."

Residents said they despaired over how to combat a problem that was keeping them awake at night and leaving them afraid to go out after dark.

One tenant, who also did not want to give their name, said: "The housing association says to keep a diary of the incidents but if I wrote down everything I’d be doing it my whole life!"

Police Constable Nicola Magee, who also attended the meeting, said: "It is the job of the neighbourhood PCSO to address alcohol-related issues, although police will address it if they come across it.

"Mike’s beat is solely Angel Meadows, while police officers are covering the whole of Heywood.

"I would suggest that any residents who are concerned take Mike’s direct mobile number and then they can call him and he can make his way over.

"However, if it is late at night, or you are concerned for your own or your property’s safety, don’t hesitate to ring the police.

"The more calls that are made means the area will become seen as a hotspot and patrolled more and you can call anonymously."

Township manager Peter McNulty said "We need to get together with the Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, police and the housing association to see what can be done to combat these problems.

"Building up the confidence of residents and pushing down on opportunities for these people to cause trouble is key."

maybe he could postition those camera's in WELL KNOWN trouble hotspots and nuisance hotspots....one namely pot hall bridge, where last week after dropping my daughter off at home at 7pm i was walking back under the bridge to witness three KIDS, aged between 10-13 who were trying to intimidate, threaten and harrass two quite nondescript passers by by throwing water balloons at them and threatening violence towards them.... then once i arrived they then focused their attentions on me?! i am a 40 yr old guy and when im being 'offered out' by an arrogant, ill-educated, disprespectful and insolent ten year old then there is something seriously wrong with this town/region and country!! not so long ago my friend was assaulted in the same place by a group of youth yobs, countless stories of nuisance from the same area.....these KIDS think it highly amusing to intimidate and threaten people/passers-by whilst their parents obviously couldnt care less as they sit indoors watching mindless TV!! WE NEED TO WAKE UP VERY VERY FAST!!! we have seen how bad this town has become over recent years and unless PARENTS get a grip of THEIR KIDS then this problem is going to escalate beyond our worse nightmares very very soon!!! it is no good to hide away from the anti-social and disgusting behaviour of THEIR kids, they have to take control again and instill some decency and respect for these individuals who are quite clearly going to struggle through a degenerate, crime-riddled, unemployable life! it is time we stopped allowing the KIDS of our towns to overrun the place and create all kinds of havoc and mayhem on OUR streets! so first of all we need to monitor the nuisance situation, find the culprits responsible and then prosecute both the KIDS and the PARENTS!! maybe then parents will take a firmer grip?! I AM ABSOLUTELY RESPONSIBLE FOR MY ACTIONS AND I AM ALSO RESONSIBLE FOR MY DAUGHTERS ACTIONS UNTIL SHE REACHES THE AGE OF 16!! ANY PERSON READING THIS WITH CHILDREN UNDEFR 16....YOU ARE ALSO RESPONSIBLE!! do not allow your children to destroy OUR community, or what is left of our community! this town deserves more and deserves BETTER!

Couple of stories in the Advertiser this week-"Flat residents plead for end to yob misery" and "Family is left in despair by mill gangs". Meanwhile Inspector Butterworth wonders what to do with his CCTV cameras.
