Police hunt new focus on crime
15/ 5/2008
POLICE are looking for the worst crime areas in Heywood to station hi-tech CCTV cameras.
Five top-of-the-range cameras commissioned to cut down on crime in Heywood at the beginning of the year have not yet been allocated a specific area.
Town police chief, Inspector Darrell Butterworth, wants residents worried about crime to come forward to decide the best locations for the equipment.
Heywood Township allocated approximately £10,000 for five new cameras in January, after it emerged that two of the town’s existing cameras were not working and others needed updating.
Three further cameras were commissioned by Rochdale Safer Communities Partnership, bringing the total number of new cameras to eight, but as yet only three of these have been deployed.
Outgoing Township chairman, Councillor Colin Lambert, who is also chairman of the Township Safer Communities Partnership, said the town is desperate for the cameras to be installed.
He said: "I am furious to find out that five of the cameras we allocated public funds for are sitting in a cupboard somewhere.
"We chose to use valuable Township resources for these because of the benefits they can bring to the community. They are badly needed to assist the police in many areas of the town and should be installed as quickly as possible."
A spokesperson from Rochdale Safer Communities Partnership said that getting cameras deployed is a complicated process, subject to approval from residents and officials.
Niomi Huxley, communications officer, said: "Three of the cameras commissioned at the beginning of the year are deployed in properties on Bury Road, New York Street and Argyle Parade.
"One of the cameras is due to be deployed on Adelaide Street. The cameras are regularly monitored and Gaynor Emerson, the community safety officer for Heywood, has already retrieved footage which can be used for evidence.
"With regard to the three other cameras commissioned by the Safer Communities Partnership, they were only paid for and delivered recently. Gaynor is working closely with the police to receive referrals to deploy the CCTV cameras.
"Unfortunately it is not a quick process. Suitable properties need to be identified and the residents have to agree to the camera being installed on their property.
"Following on from this, a CCTV engineer will conduct a survey on the property and the community safety officer will ensure that the CCTV complies with relevant legislation."
Inspector Butterworth said: "We have these cameras and we are eager to get them in use as soon as possible. What we need is for people to let us know where they want them and if they would agree to having one set up in their neighbourhood.
"CCTV is a very valuable tool for the police, both as a deterrent against crime and for gathering evidence after a crime has been committed."
Anyone wishing to ask about CCTV in their area should call 0161 856 8589 or 01706 924910.
