Lib Dems snatch seat in election

2/ 5/2008

LABOUR held two of their three Heywood seats in Thursday’s local elections - but saw the Liberal Democrats snatch one from them for the third year in a row.

Current Township chairman, Councillor Colin Lambert, held onto his seat in West Heywood, while Councillor Linda Robinson was again victorious, retaining her position in Hopwood Hall. But Malcolm Bruce claimed the Heywood North seat to become the town’s third Liberal Democrat councillor.

He replaces Labour councillor Brian Davies, who had stepped down after holding the seat for 10 years.

The new Councillor Bruce said: “I put a lot of hard work into this campaign and I am very happy to see that it has all paid off.

“We can now start bringing more Liberal Democrat influence into Heywood and I will continue the hard work being done by Peter Rush and Doreen Brophy-Lee.”

Councillor Lambert blamed national government issues for the Labour loss in the tightly-contested North ward seat.

He said: “Labour candidates around the country are paying the price of the failures the public sees the House of Commons making.”

I have to say that after all these years of not being listened to finally the public of Heywood have turned out and said NO to the terrible decisions that Labour made. This is now our chance to get a member of the Liberal Democrats on our side and to change Heywood, the way we want it to be! Let Malcolm Bruce do his job as a Heywood councillor and listen to the public, like he will i'm sure. Well done and I hope you have a good but challenging term as a Heywood councillor!
