Armed police storm house

ARMED police stormed a terraced house in Heywood on Sunday night after air gun pellets were fired at people and vehicles.
A security worker guarding a flats development opposite the house on Smith Street, off Manchester Street, had to be treated at Rochdale Infirmary for a puncture wound to his back and three vehicles were damaged.
Officers from Heywood police station called in the armed response unit and the house was surrounded. At around 10pm a large area between Church Street and Manchester Street was sealed off, people were told to stay indoors and no-one was allowed to enter or leave the Duke of Wellington pub on Manchester Street.
Police stormed the house and a Taser gun was used to overpower someone inside.
The security guard, Kenneth Green, 53, who was guarding the Weldon Homes flats development, was not seriously injured and was allowed home after treatment.
Head of Heywood police, Inspector Darrell Butterworth, said they had seized a pellet-firing air rifle, which does not need a firearms certificate.
Russell Kershaw, 41, of Smith Street has been charged with possessing a firearm with intent to cause injury. He appeared before Rochdale Magistrates on Tuesday and remanded in custody to appear at Bolton Crown Court on 15 July.
