Bridge earmarked for quick restoration

TOWNSHIP councillors have drawn up their own shopping list to try to speed up restoration of Queen’s Park Road bridge and the approaches to it.

They say they are tired of waiting for a facelift to one of the major gateways into Heywood.

At the last Township meeting, chairman Councillor Colin Lambert received the backing of fellow members when he suggested the committee should ask contractors to provide prices to restore ornate lamp standards either side of the bridge and also renew "dilapidated and dangerous" iron fencing between the bridge and the top of Queen’s Park Road.

Already, one quote of £50,000 has been received to renew the fencing and the Township is waiting for a price from a specialist company for the lamps restoration.

Councillor Lambert said: "A lot of money needs to be spent on major structural repairs to the bridge and we have been told that it will be at least two years before the money is available for that.

"But there isn’t any reason why other work which would really improve such an important route into Heywood can’t be started in the meantime. At the moment it’s a mess.We keep telling people what a fantastic park we now have as a result of the restoration work. But the road which passes it, and which is one of the most attractive of all the approaches to Heywood, is in need of a lot of improvement."

He added: "The iron fencing on either side of the road is in a terrible state and I think it could be classed as dangerous at the top end, with rusting railings broken and sticking out into the pavement.

"We will be pressing the council to give this work priority, even though we have to wait for the main structural work."

He has found this old picture in library archives which shows the bridge in all its splendour, taken shortly after it was opened.
