Police discover cannabis farms

TWO cannabis farms have been discovered by police in Heywood in the space of less than 24 hours.

In an early morning raid on a terraced house in Green Lane on Monday, 75 plants were found growing in a room allegedly equipped with heaters and other equipment.

A man of 27, whose name has not been released by police, was arrested in the house and taken away for questioning.

He was later released on police bail pending further inquiries. A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said the man had been arrested "on suspicion of growing cannabis and dishonestly abstracting electricity".

Boxes of plants and equipment have been taken from the house for forensic testing.

A mile away at Angel Meadow flats, police who went to interview a tenant "about another matter" early on Tuesday smelled what they believed was cannabis as they walked through the door. A search of the premises revealed 30 cannabis plants growing in one of the rooms.

Heywood’s police chief, Inspector Darrell Butterworth, said the success of the operation at Green Lane was due entirely to information supplied by members of the public.

He said: "We are very grateful to members of the local community who supplied us with the information we needed to make an arrest at Green Lane. The incident at Angel Meadow came as a result of a routine visit by officers in connection with another matter. The discovery of cannabis plants growing was a result of an officer recognising the distinctive smell."

A man arrested at the Angel Meadow address was also bailed pending further inquiries.
