First turbine spins into action

7/ 4/2008

THE first turbine at Scout Moor windfarm, which overlooks Heywood, is up and spinning.

Contractors switched on the first of 26 turbines, which will eventually make up England’s largest onshore windfarm, on Monday morning.

Eight of the 100m high structures were due to be plugged into the national grid last month, but poor weather conditions and complex testing procedures caused a delay.

So far 13 have been erected.

Mick Humphreys, site manager for construction firm Nordex, said the he hoped to have another turbine spinning by the end of the week.

He added: “The actual commissioning phase of the scheme is very complex because there are so many components in the turbines that need to be tested before they can be switched on.”
