CS gas attacker faces jail

25/10/2007

A MAN who sprayed CS gas into the face of a Heywood off-licence owner during a bungled robbery has been warned he faces a jail sentence.

Bradley Dixon, 23, of Benmore Close, Heywood, pleaded guilty at Bolton Crown Court this week to assaulting the shop owner, 50-year-old father-of-three David Connolly.

Dixon, who will be sentenced on November 12, has been warned by a judge that he faces a custodial sentence.

Mr Connolly, who lives in Middleton, had run the off-licence, called Jimmy’s, in Tower Street with his wife Brenda for two years.  But they decided to quit the business after a second, unconnected robbery the night after the CS gas attack.

In the second attack, Mrs Connolly, 43, was assaulted and injured as a thief jumped over the counter. Mrs Connolly now works nights in a children’s home and her husband has still not found another job.

Mrs Connolly said: “I am pleased this man has pleaded guilty because it means that my husband will not have to go through the ordeal of being called as a witness. We assumed there would be a trial and we would have to go to court."
