Days Out: Pulp Fiction, Liverpool Festival, Fun Song Factory, Wildlife Trusts, farmers' markets
by Conrad Astley25/ 8/2005
WHILE Manchester's busy all weekend with Pride, a trip down the
M62 to Liverpool is possibly the last chance to enjoy a carefree
summer's day enjoying music, before the long nights start drawing
in.
Britain's biggest free annual outdoor music festival is going on
just an hour away.
Although the
Mathew Street Festival began as part
of Liverpool's Beatles Week, it has now grown to embrace things not
related to the Fab Four.
An astonishing 150 tribute bands from 20 countries including Brazil
and Japan will be playing on six outdoor stages and at more than 40
indoor venues during the three days.
But alongside these acts, boasting names such as Crowded Scouse,
Robbing Williams and Stereotonics, the festival is also showcasing
big-name bands for the first time in its 13-year history.
Reformed Manchester punk legends The Buzzcocks will perform at the
Pier Head main stage on Sunday, along with The Christians, Tony
Christie, The Stranglers and Gold Blade.
Brit award winners McFly will play at the festival on Bank Holiday
Monday, along with acts including Lemar, Lucie Silvas and James
Bourne from Busted.
Thousands of pairs of tickets for Monday's concert are being given
away free by organisers, and are available from HMV stores across
the North West.
The festival is on from Saturday until Monday. Music fans arriving
at Liverpool should follow signs to the Mathew Street
Festival.

CINEMA lovers are being offered a double whammy not to be forgotten
next week.
The
Stella Artois Screen is coming to Heaton Park,
with an open-air showing of the Tarantino classic Pulp
Fiction.
And the violent gangster yarn, starring Samuel L Jackson, John
Travolta and Bruce Willis, is being kicked off with a performance
from New York City's finest - the Fun Loving Criminals.
The band will perform their hit Scooby Snacks, which samples
dialogue from Pulp Fiction's café robbery scene, along with covers
from the film's soundtrack, which included tracks such as Chuck
Berry's You Never Can Tell and Dusty Springfield's Son of a
Preacher Man.
Huey, Fast and Frank the Rhythm Man will also play tunes from their
forthcoming album Livin' in the City, to get cinema lovers in the
mood for the dark humour of Tarantino's gritty classic.
The Stella Artois Screen tour started in London's Royal Kensington
Gardens earlier in the month, with a screening of Richard Kelly's
cult film Donnie Darko, with an exclusive performance of the film's
score performed by the National Symphony Orchestra. Composer
Michael Andrews also performed the song Mad World, a cover of Tears
for Fears' 80s hit which was used on the film's soundtrack.
The screening will take place at Heaton Park on September 3.

YOUNGSTERS will have an opportunity to meet Ozzie and their heroes
from the
Fun Song Factory TV series next
week.
The Fun Song crew are visiting stores in east Manchester and
Trafford Park to help launch the series' new DVD and video.
Ozzie, his little nephew Harry, Cal, Cookie, Melody, OJ, and Page
will put children and parents through their musical paces when they
perform action songs and nursery rhymes.
The characters will appear at the Eastlands Asda store off Ashton
New Road at 10am on Monday and at the Trafford Park Asda store off
Barton Dock Road later in the day at 2pm.
IF you're bonkers about butterflies or mad about moles, you can
find out more about local wildlife on Saturday and Sunday.
Representatives from the
Wildlife Trusts, a
network of 47 local trusts nationwide, will be on hand to give
information about local nature reserves and how people can support
wildlife in the area.
The events take place on Saturday from 10am to 4pm and Sunday from
11am to 4pm at Pets at Home, Didsbury Road, Heaton Norris.
THE latest chance to taste the produce of North West farmers is
being offered in Manchester this weekend.
A
farmers' market will be set up in Piccadilly
Gardens, offering fresh vegetables - some dug from the soil the
night before - wild boar and ostrich meat, cheeses and even English
wines and liqueurs.
The market will be open from 8.30am-6pm today (Friday) and
Saturday. It will return to the city centre several times
throughout the autumn.
