Review: Moby at the Apollo
by Rebecca Camber19/ 5/2005
THE little bald man has experimented with punk rock, heavy
metal, dance and the sort of classical songs that you can drift
away to in your own living room.
So, it's no surprise that his gigs are a bit of an anomaly - as is
his audience. The crowd, a strange mix of hardened contemporary
clubbers and middle-aged ex-ravers, who now reserve Moby for the
dinner parties, hardly knew what to make of his fanfare.
Starting with a bit of guitar-crunching rock,
Moby
then dived into the lacklustre Find My Baby to the nod of the
middle-of-the-roaders. But they ground to a halt and were
bewildered when he launched into some electro-disco.
You get the feeling that he can't wait to show off his next skill,
and it comes as a relief that it's an all-round crowd pleaser, We
Are All Made Of Stars. Bodyrock keeps the momentum going and he
starts warming to the crowd, charming them with talk of The
Hacienda, 24 Hour Party People and Joy Division. By the time he
comes to Lift Me Up, from his fifth album, Hotel, the crowd are
swaying together to the beautiful haunting voice of Laura
Dawn.
By the end, Moby seemed surprisingly at home, pausing the show
briefly to nip to the loo, chatting about his tour bus experiences
and his failed childhood ambitions to be a scientist.
But, when the lights went up, I was glad that Moby wasn't a great
scientist, because his music is a work of art.
