MUSIC: Goldfrapp, Apollo, Sun 2 Nov

FRESH from their Bridgewater Hall concert in June, Goldfrapp bring their electro-folk extravaganza to the Art Deco splendour of the Apollo.

It’s their biggest Manchester concert to date – and a world away from the early cabaret-style appearances that set them apart from anyone else in the charts.

The music of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory has taken some surprising directions since their ethereal debut Felt Mountain was released back in 2000.

With her animal masks and striped stockings, former performance artist Alison’s blend of cabaret-style theatricality with haunting, high-pitched vocals earned her a loyal but limited following. Almost a decade on, she and Gregory have ditched heavy synthesizers and aggressive sexuality for a more bucolic, acoustic sound and gained a wider fanbase along the way.

Their most recent album Seventh Tree evoked pagan rituals and meadow frolics, and saw them ditch the glam and glitter for flowing locks and kaftans.

How their act will translate to the cavernous Apollo is anyone’s guess, but with their attitude and Alison’s immensely powerful voice, they’re still capable of sending a shiver down the spine.
